Chargers record two shutout victories in boys soccer

The Boerne Champion boys soccer team continues to play well, especially on defense, and picked up two more district wins towards the end of last week.

Champion hosted Veterans Memorial on Thursday in a game moved from Tuesday because of the weather and then visited New Braunfels Canyon on Friday.

The Chargers won both matches and their defense has been stout after they won both games via the shutout. In fact, they’ve won six games this year and recorded shutouts in five of those victories.

Vs. NB Canyon

Champion visited New Braunfels Canyon Friday and earned a 4-0 win.

The Chargers tallied four goals against the Cougars, but Champion coach Clifton Tierney said it was their defense that was the difference in the match.

“Even though the score was 4-0, we won this game defensively,” he said. “Our defense created our offense, which led to a lot of goals off of transition play.”

In Friday’s match, Liam Willis, Jones Ferguson, Bentley McCool and Alfredo Castellanos all tallied goals and all four were assisted after Crew Pulliam, McCool, Brogan Dempsey and Willis all recorded one assist apiece.

Vs. Veterans Memorial

Champion’s defense was on display again after the Chargers kept the Patriots off the board and picked up the 3-0 win.

The Chargers tallied 2 goals in the first half and then added an insurance goal in the second half.

Brogan Dempsey, Matthew Magaw and Alfredo Castellanos all tallied goals, while Bentley McCool and Dempsey added one assist each.
