The Champion girls soccer team took a bunch of shots but only one got through during Friday’s district opener against Wagner at Charger Field.

It was enough to give Champion a 1-0 victory over the Thunderbirds and start the Lady Chargers at 1-0 in 26-5A. They are 3-5 overall and visit Veterans Memorial Thursday.

Wagner didn’t let much through as they packed the box and seemed to focus more on defense than on offense.

In fact, Wagner didn’t manage a shot on goal all night, while the Chargers had more than 40 shots with at least 16 of those on goal.

Champion kept the Wagner keeper busy and she played well, coming up with 15 saves but one of those 40+ shots found the back of the net after freshman Jayme Harrell converted in the 13th minute on the Emma Mae Dixon assist for the 1-0 lead that held until the end.

Every once in a while, the Thunderbirds would get the ball past midfield but not very often as the Chargers dominated field position and kept the ball on the Wagner end of the field most of the night.
