After only losing one game in the first two and a half months of the season, the Boerne Champion boys basketball team dropped two games last week.
The Chargers were edged by Wagner on Tuesday and then hosted Veterans Memorial on Friday where the Patriots handed Champion its second straight setback, 55-38.
Champion slips to 5- 2 in 26- 5A to close out the first round. The Chargers, 23-3 overall, kicked off the second round Tuesday against New Braunfels Canyon before visiting Kerrville Tivy on Friday.
Champion had a hard time getting its offense going on Friday and was held to single digits in the first three quarters.
The Patriots were up 12-9 after one quarter, with all 9 Champion points coming off 3-pointers, two from Baeden Burdick and another from Braden Baum.
Veterans Memorial outscored the Chargers in the second, 11-7, as Baum had 5 of their 7 points and Dakarai Hodge added 2 and the Pats were up at the break, 23-16.
The Chargers struggled in the third and only tallied 7 again, while Veterans Memorial netted 13 to take a 36-23 lead into the fourth quarter.
Champion played better in the final period and finished with 14 in the stanza but couldn’t get any closer than 10 points as the Patriots outscored them after they hit for 19, but most of those came at the freethrow line. The Chargers had to start fouling to stop the clock and Veterans Memorial was up for the challenge. The Patriots went to the line 22 times in the fourth quarter and made enough – 14 – to keep the lead at double digits. They made 9 of their first 12 at the line to start the quarter and built an 18-point lead with 3:03 remaining.
Baum finished with 16 points in the game to lead the Chargers in scoring, Charlie Georgelos added 7 points, Burdick had 6, Justin Hill recorded 4 points, Mason Wyatt added 3 and Hodge chipped in with 2.
