Five teenagers were behind bars Monday morning after an apparent stolen getaway vehicle failed its mission and the driver crashed into the rear passenger side of a patrol vehicle.
Information from the Boerne Police Department indicates a 14-year-old, a 15-year-old and three 17-year-olds were arrested after more than a dozen vehicles were burglarized in the early hours Monday morning.
Three of the teenagers were apprehended shortly after the first 911 call came in at 3:30 a.m. when they crashed a stolen white Mercedes Benz into the back of a patrol vehicle, information stated. An initial report indicated two suspects remained at large. However, the two at-large teenagers were apprehended by 7:30 a.m. They were found on foot less than a mile from where their alleged partners in crime were caught.
The first call came into BPD when Woods of Frederick Creek resident Clyde Saunders notified officers he had personal security footage of individuals breaking into his vehicle. In all, the teenagers are suspected to have burglarized at least a dozen vehicles and illegally gained access to one resident’s garage via a garage door opener in one of the accessed vehicles, the BPD information stated.
Police officers retrieved tools, firearms, a rifle, several pistols and the stolen Mercedes Benz that was crashed into the patrol vehicle, and the items are believed to have been stolen in the string of burglaries.
An investigation by BPD indicates the teenagers burglarized unlocked vehicles in the Woods of Frederick Creek, Boerne Heights and Kendall Creek Estates neighborhoods.
While this is one of a string of vehicle burglaries hitting this slice of the Hill Country over the past couple of years with increasing occurrence, BPD officials stated there is no evidence to suggest the string of burglaries this morning are related to any previous incidents. However, BPD continues to work with the San Antonio Police Department as the local agency suspects this is another example of San Antonio residents traveling to Boerne to commit the burglaries.
This is not the first time several vehicles in these neighborhoods have been targeted – as the police reports and regular statements from BPD have indicated. However, BPD officials are saying this appears to be another inci-dent where doors were left unlocked.
Nine months ago, Woods of Frederick Creek neighborhood residents experienced nearly a dozen unlocked vehicles broken into during the overnight hours.
At the end of last month, another string of burglaries took place in a Boerne neighborhood along Interstate 10, warranting the police department to issue a press release urging residents to lock their vehicle doors and to remove valuables and key fobs from their vehicles, no matter where they reside. The press release encourages residents to be proactive and smart and to avoid leaving anything in vehicles a “thief could steal.”
“The Boerne Police Department reminds everyone throughout the city to protect property and vehicles by remembering three simple tasks that will greatly reduce your chance of being a burglary victim,” the release states. “Lock, take and hide!”
Anyone with more information on the burglaries or who may have personal security footage is asked to contact BPD at 830-249-8645.
