Take caution when lighting pyrotechnics; Fireworks remain illegal in city limits
With New Years Eve just hours away, the Boerne Fire Department reminds residents that it is illegal to set off fireworks within city limits.
Those planning to use fireworks in areas where it is permitted, fire officials stress that safety must be the top priority.
In 2022, fireworks caused an estimated 10,200 injuries nationwide, with more than half affecting people aged 5-24. Fireworks also started 31,000 fires, including 3,500 structure fires and nearly 900 vehicle fires, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The Boerne Fire Department stresses these essential safety tips for residents ready to light fireworks: — Avoid using fireworks while under the influence of alcohol.
— Always follow the instructions provided on the fireworks.
— Children should never handle fireworks and make sure spectators are a safety distance from where the fireworks are being set off.
— With ongoing drought conditions, never shoot fireworks near dry grass, brush, or other flammable materials.
— Never aim fireworks at homes or individuals.
— Store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
— Never try to re-light fireworks that have not fully functioned.
— Have a water source, such as a hose or bucket, readily available to handle emergencies.
Fireworks can bring excitement to celebrations, but they also pose significant risks if not handled responsibly. For additional safety information, BFD has posted a firework safety tips video on its website, filmed in collaboration with Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, the Kendall County Office of Emergency Management and Kendall County Emergency Medical Services.
