A toddler numbered among the critically injured when a car plowed through a fence at a Boerne private preschool last month has succumbed to her injuries, officials said.
One-year-old Mkaya Amrani, who was injured Dec. 19 in the tragedy at the ExcellED Montessori Plus school, died Thursday.
One of her teachers, 22-yearold Alexia Rosales, perished at the scene when a driver — whom Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said “possibly had a medical episode” — backed into another car and forced both vehicles into and over the fence, pinning Rosales beneath.
A Christmas production at the school had just finished. The teacher and children were on a playground.
Amrani had been listed in critical condition since the accident, one of five children rushed to hospitals in San Antonio for treatment of their injuries.
At least one other adult and three more children were injured but did not require hospitalization.
A statement released Friday by the school asks the community to keep the families of Mkaya and Rosales in their thoughts.
“It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the loss of Mkaya, a beloved member of our school community, following the tragic accident on Dec. 19. Our hearts are with her family as they navigate this unimaginable loss,” the statement reads.
In addition, it said, “Mkaya brought light and joy to our school, and her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. As we grieve together, we are committed to supporting our students, staff and families during this difficult time.
“We ask that you hold Mkaya’s family, as well as the family of teacher Alexia Rosales, in your thoughts. So many lives have been deeply affected by this horrific accident, and our hearts ache for everyone impacted.
“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from the community. Your kindness has been a source of strength and comfort to all of us.”
A GoFundMe page set up to help the Rosales family with funeral expenses raised more than $47,000 in the days following the accident.
The driver’s name has not been released, and no charges have been announced by the Sheriff’s Office.
