Boerne High closed out its 2024 volleyball season on a high note after they defeated playoff-bound New Braunfels Tuesday at Greyhound Gym in an emotional match. It was Senior Night and the team sent off the six BHS seniors on a winning note after the Lady Hounds defeated the Unicorns, 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 18-16.
BHS ends the year with a record of 22-14 overall. They were 7-9 in district and finished sixth in the 26-5A standings, two spots removed from a playoff spot under first-year Greyhound coach Staci Lawrence.
Lawrence said Tuesday’s victory was definitely the highlight of their season.
“This match was huge for us, just comparing how we were able to bounce back against every team the second time around, we got a little better,” she said. “I think the seniors did a good job coming out in the first two sets in setting that tone. They embodied our motto of rise and be resilient today.”
Boerne went up 2-0 in the match count and had chances in the third set, but New Braunfels avoided the sweep with a 25-22 win. The Unicorns also posted a 25-23 victory in the fourth set to send it to a winnertakeall fifth game. In that fifth set, New Braunfels looked like they were going to run away with it. The Unicorns went up 6-2 and forced Lawrence to burn a timeout.
NB took a 5-point lead at one point and was the first to 10 at 10-6 but the Lady Hounds were resilient. BHS went on a 6-2 run and tied it at 12-12.
Boerne had match point at 15-14 but the Unicorns knotted it at 15-15 and then pulled ahead 16-15 before BHS tied it at 16-16.
From there, the Lady Hounds tallied the final two points to seal the deal and appropriately, it was a senior – Ava Rocchio – with the final point of the season on a kill.
The celebration began and there were plenty of tears being shed as the players reveled in the win.
Lawrence said it was a great way to end the year and head into the offseason.
“I think it’ll be a good momentum piece; I think it’ll be a good thing to remember as to why we work hard and why we push through those challenging drills, it’ll help us moving forward,” she said.
Lawerence added that she was especially happy for the seniors who walked off the court with a victory in their final match as Greyhounds. “I’m very thankful they’ve been part of this program,” she said. “They got to experience this success today and it’s going to be one they remember.”
Seniors this year are Ainsley Hotchkin, Presley Mullins, Adyson Hudson, Calynn Ramos, Kinsley Sawyer and Ava Rocchio.
Rocchio led the team in kills on Tuesday with 10, Kaylie Bourn finished with 9 kills and Bella Pettet added 7 kills, Ainsley Hotchkin, Kynsie Jones and Sawyer dropped in 2 aces each, Rocchio came up with 8 blocks, while Paige Stegall and Ramos tallied with 5 blocks apiece.
