The Geneva School of Boerne football team won’t have much time to dwell on last Friday’s 61-7 hammering at the hands of Holy Cross.
Geneva has to move on and focus on this week’s opponent, New Braunfels Christian Academy.
First, because it’s another district game and secondly, because it’s a short week and they play a day early.
The Eagles visit NB Christian on Thursday and it’s the GVTC Game of the Week. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Geneva coach Grant Gaston said his players know their game will be carried on GVTC, but added that it won’t affect how they prepare.
“Our players are aware that the game is televised but they are focused on what they need to do to compete with a very solid New Braunfels Christian team,” he said.
Geneva is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in district, while the Wildcats are 5-1 overall and 1-1 in district.
NB Christian only has one loss and also took it on the chin against No. 1 state ranked Holy Cross a few weeks ago after the Knights won that contest, 48-0.
Geneva was trailing at halftime last week, 48-0, and then the game went to 8-minute quarters in the second half with a running clock.
Gaston said playing a team like Holy Cross, and others, only makes them better.
“We are battle hardened after playing Holy Cross, along with the likes of SACS, Sabinal, La Pryor, KIPP Sunnyside, Brentwood and Hyde Park over the previous weeks,” he said. “We have intentionally stepped into the arena against great foes so that as iron sharpens iron, we are sharpened by the opponents we have played against.”
Gaston said the Wildcats always have a solid game plan going into a contest.
“They’re very balanced on offense and will game plan to your weaknesses. They’re not afraid to run the ball or pass the ball depending on what you give them and what they can excel at,” he said. “Their running back is very good and they have a young quarterback who can really sling it. On defense they are aggressive. The key for us will be tackling.”
The Eagles play a day earlier than normal for its only Thursday game of the year, but Gaston said that doesn’t matter.
“It really does not affect us,” he said. “We do most of our work Monday through Wednesday, so we will not lose any practice time by playing a Thursday game,” he said.
