Lady Chargers outlast Rangers in five-set match

The Boerne Champion volleyball team picked up a big district win last Friday at home and it’s helped the Lady Chargers separate from the pack a little bit in the district standings.

Champion went five sets with Smithson Valley before claiming the 21-25, 25-16, 25- 17, 22- 25, 15- 9 victory. Friday’s win gives the Lady Chargers the sweep over the Lady Rangers this year so they’ll have the tiebreaker against them if needed.

Champion also improves to 8-2 in district, while New Braunfels and Smithson Valley are both 6- 3. Those three schools ended the first round of district play tied at 6-2 and tied for second.

The Lady Chargers are 29-6 overall and were off Tuesday. They resume district play Friday at Alamo Heights before hosting Boerne High, Oct. 15.

A volleyball match that goes five games usually results in players posting some pretty good numbers and that was the case last Friday at Charger Gym.

Five Champion players finished in double-digit kills after Ella Coleman tallied 15 kills, Brielle Boothe and Cassidy Breuer both added 13 kills and Taylor Fenton and Briley Wolff recorded 12 kills each.

Boothe, Wolff and Samantha Calderon all dropped in 2 aces, while Fenton came up with 4 blocks and Breuer added 3 blocks.

Calderon and Coleman turned in 18 digs apiece, Azteca Crawford recorded 11 digs, Boothe added 9 kills and Bella Perez had 8 digs, while Crawford tallied 53 assists.
