Comfort High closed out the non-district portion of its schedule last Friday by hosting Bandera for homecoming.
The Bobcats took an early 13-0 lead midway through the first quarter and then held a 29-21 advantage early in the fourth but couldn’t maintain it.
Bandera tallied the final two touchdowns to record the 35-29 win.
Comfort is 2-3 through its five non-district games. They were cheated out of another non-district contest when their season opener at Brackett was called because of lightening in the area.
Comfort opens district play Oct. 18 at home against Rogers.
Bobcats coach Jay Rieken said they’ll rest up during the break and added that they need to work on eliminating penalties and taking better care of the ball.
When Comfort was up 13-0, they intercepted a Bandera pass and had the ball inside the Bulldogs’ 35-yard line and a chance to go up 20-0, but Comfort fumbled on a bad snap to give the ball back to Bandera.
“We just had a couple of turnovers that were drive killers. We have to overcome and correct our mistakes because everything we want and shooting for is still in front of us,” Rieken said. “Two fumbled snaps really cost us. We let them back in it. We had the chance to go up on them and put the pressure on them.”
After Comfort took a 29-21 lead, they gained possession with nine minutes left and had a chance to kill some clock.
The drive started well but bogged down with consecutive penalties to put them at 4th and long, forcing a punt.
Comfort only had the ball once more in the game and again, two penalties moved them in the wrong direction. They went for it on 4th and 25 and didn’t convert with less than a minute left, basically ending the game.
“We’re not geared for 2nd and 25,” he said. “We know that but we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot. It happens and we’ll take it as a learning experience.”
