Broncos edge Lady Chargers in tiebreaker match,

6-4

SAN ANTONIO – The girls water polo teams from Boerne Champion and Brandeis met Saturday morning to break a tie atop the district standings.

When the regular season ended, the two teams were both 9-1 in district and had split their two matches so they faced off Saturday at the Northside Aquatics Center to decide seeding.

The Lady Chargers had the early lead Saturday but Brandeis turned in the stronger finish and went on to win, 6-4, to take the rubber match.

By virtue of their victory, the Broncos take the No. 1 seed and Champion will be the No. 2 seed once the postseason starts this week.

Both the Champion boys and girls open the postseason after a bye and will play later this week.

The Lady Chargers meet the winner of Alamo Heights and Pieper, while the Champion boys team tangles with the winner of Johnson and Canyon Lake.

Last Saturday’s match was tied at 2-2 at the end of one quarter. The Chargers scored two straight in the second and went up 4-2 but Brandeis tallied a goal right before halftime and the Charger lead was down to 4-3 going into the break.

Champion was held scoreless in the second half, while Brandeis recorded two goals in the third and another in the fourth.

This is their fourth meeting this year and all four matches have been defensive struggles, with three of them decided by one goal until Saturday.

Each team has beat the other twice.

Ana Metz tallied 2 goals for the Chargers, Cora Skoog and Bennett Rice each knocked in 1 goal apiece. Cayden VanDyne, Rice, Breanna Hempton and Skoog all recorded 1 assist each and Kate Deykin finished with 4 steals.

Brandies managed 16 shots and VanDyne came up with 10 saves from the goalie position.
