Champion water polo teams set to begin playoffs, season comes to an end for BHS

The 2024 season continues for the Boerne Champion water polo teams, while the season came to an end for Boerne High.

Boerne Champion

The Champion girls met Brandeis Saturday morning to break a tie in the district standings.

If the Lady Chargers won, they’ll take the No. 1 seed but a loss to the Broncos drops Champion to the No. 2 seed in the district.

The Champion boys ran away with the district title and will be the No. 1 seed entering the playoffs.

Both Charger teams will get byes in the first round.

Boerne High

The Boerne High water polo team wrapped up its first season playing the sport.

There were a few bumps and bruises along the way for the Greyhound boys and girls team, but head coach Brandon Cheves said they learned and got better as the season progressed.

“Every game was an improvement,” Cheves said. “I’m very proud of them.”

The bright spot was the Boerne boys winning two matches this year, both coming against Marshall in district matches.

Water polo was introduced as a UIL sport in the fall of 2022, so most of the other teams that the Greyhounds played this year had a two-year head start.

The top four teams in the district made the playoffs and the BHS boys finished fifth, one spot removed from clinching a spot.

“We were just shy of the playoffs,” Cheves said. “Not bad for just under two months in.”

Members of the boys team are Cooper Wagner, Connor Eddy, Isaac Martin Johnson, Isaac Solis, Peyton Dadd, Zachary Pyle, Miguel Villarreal, Larry Jones, Cole Grotjohn, Cannon Kunz, Tanner Smith and Zayden Arnold. Grant Daum and Samantha Grona were managers and Brandon Cheves is the head coach. Submitted photos
