Boerne Champion is the 2024 Peanut Butter Bowl champs after they collected the most jars of peanut butter for charity.
Every year, schools from around South Texas collect jars of peanut butter that are given to food banks to help feed the hungry, and this year the Chargers out collected everyone – and it wasn’t even close.
Champion gathered a whopping 24,535 jars but did get a little help from their friends.
Texas Star Nut & Food Company in Boerne donated 24,000 jars of peanut butter to help Champion smash last year’s record of 8,207 jars collected by Copperas Cove. Close to 100 high schools participated in this year’s Peanut Butter Bowl and collected 37 tons of peanut butter. It’s a far cry from where it started nine years ago when the only schools participating were Johnson and Brandeis.
Copperas Cove was last year’s champ but finished second this year with 10,674 jars, according to Steve Teel, who came up with the idea of the Peanut Butter bowl several years ago as part of his ministry outreach.
There was a ceremony at Alamo Heights Tuesday morning and another event was held later in the afternoon at Champion where members of the football team, district representatives, school administrators and invited guests attended such as J.C. Taylor from Texas Star Nut & Food Company and Debi Watson from Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries.
Charger football coach Blane Ellis spoke and said he was proud of the people of Boerne for rallying around such a good cause.
“Our community is great,” he said. “We had bins out at the football game and they loaded up my office with peanut butter.”
The Chargers received a trophy, a couple of footballs and some baseball caps with the Peanut Butter Bowl logos on them.
At the end of the ceremony, the players were led in a chant by Teel who started the chant by saying, “when we feed people in need,” and the players concluded with, “we all win.”
