Boerne Champion made the drive to Round Rock last Saturday morning and competed in the Gold division at the McNeil XC Invite at Old Settler’s Park.
The Chargers are scheduled to race at Southlake this weekend at Bob Jones Park.
After that, it’s the postseason for Champion as they compete in their district meet Oct. 9 in Kerrville at Flat Rock Park.
Varsity Boys
Champion tied with Katy Tompkins for second with 201 points but the Chargers ended up third after the tiebreaker was used.
The team’s sixth-place runner is used to break a tie and Tompkins’ sixth-place runner was 96th and Champion’s was 168th.
Three seniors led the Chargers after Luis Tovar placed sixth in 15:35.3, Charlie Houck was also in the top 10 after he finished ninth in 15:46.1 and Caleb Dehart came in 33rd in 16:27.6.
The next three Charger runners were sophomores after Shawn Edwards recorded a 16:55.2 for 66th, Mason Nelson clocked in at 17:05.1 for 87th and Brandon Martinez finished in 17:48.8 for 168th.
Senior William Coover rounded out the team after he was one spot behind Martinez in 169th with a time of 17:49.5 in the field of 265 runners.
Varsity Girls
The Lady Chargers finished 10th in the field of 32 teams with 350 points in the Girls Gold 5K race.
District foe Smithson Valley won the Gold race with 132 points, Aledo came in second at 208 and El Paso Franklin was third with 261 points.
Champion was without defending state champion Elizabeth Leachman and only raced with six as opposed to seven runners but still finished in the top 10.
Senior Kynley Albright had the team’s best finish after she was 46th in 19:42.1, sophomore Luciana Zazueta Ibarra came in 56th with a time of 19:52.4, while four freshman rounded out the team.
Rebecca Bezerra placed 68th in 20:02.1, Addison Graham clocked in at 20:08.2 for 74th, Madison Mungia finished in 20:37.8 for 106th and Payton Baldwin rounded out the team with a 20:47.0 for 116th in the field of 244 individual runners.
