Chargers win, give Cantu 400th career victory

Greyhound tennis team gets Pieper to pipe down as playoffs loom

The Champion tennis team defeated Wagner Tuesday at the BHS courts and in the process earned Chargers coach Joey Cantu his 400th career win.

Afterwards, there was a cake and plenty of pictures were taken with family, friends and players.

Cantu said when he first started coaching, the thought of hitting 400 wins never crossed his mind.

“I wanted to be successful as a coach but I was not thinking about how many wins that would take,” he said. “I think success is judged by the relationships and the impact I make with my players.”

The coach said he was glad his family and friends could be there to share the moment.

“My parents mean the world to me and to make them proud with this accomplishment means a lot,” he said. “It just feels great to share it with the people who helped and supported me all these years.”

Cantu noted that there have been many matches that have stood out to him over the 20-plus seasons with Boerne ISD at both BHS and Champion.

“I think last year’s (Alamo) Heights match was very memorable because of how we won it but there has been a lot of matches with them that were significant,” he said. “The 2014 regional semifinals match against Vandegrift will always be one for the ages.”

Cantu said he’s hasn’t given thought to the next milestone, whatever it may be.

“I really am enjoying this one and have not thought about 500,” he said. “It would be cool to get there but I have some other things I want to accomplish.”

The Chargers won 19-0 on Tuesday and improved to 6-1 in district. They are 7-5 overall and off until Tuesday when they continue league play at Kerrville Tivy to close out the regular season.

Boerne High

The Greyhound tennis team was in action Monday at Pieper and defeated the Warriors, 18-1.

BHS is 4-2 in district and 11-3 overall. Boerne High played Kerrville Saturday morning in a district match and also tangle with Liberty Hill Saturday afternoon in Kerrville in non-district action.

The Hounds close out the league play on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at New Braunfels and they are also scheduled to play Fredericksburg next Saturday in a non-district match before starting the playoffs.

Both BISD teams have qualified for the playoffs and the postseason starts Oct. 7-8.
