100 years of Boerne Greyhound football

100 years of Boerne Greyhound football

In honor of the Boerne Greyhounds celebrating 100 years of football in 2024, the Boerne Star will go back through its archives and publish something in every weekend’s issue during the regular season relating to the Boerne High football team from over the years. Back in the fall of 2004, BHS kicker Hunter Lawrence went on to kick 20 field goals that season, which set a state record at the time. In 100 years of Greyhound football that has included thousands of players through the system, there haven’t been too many – if any other than Lawrence – that have held an individual state record. The record came against Marshall, Texas in the state semifinals contest held in Waco. It ended up being Boerne’s only points in the game as they fell, 21-3. Lawrence went on to kick at the University of Texas and is known for knocking in the game-winning 46-yard field goal as time expired during the 2009 Big 12 Championship Game against Nebraska. Lawrence later had a tryout with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was recently inducted into the Boerne ISD Hall of Honor with the rest of the 2004 team a few years ago. The picture of Lawrence is from the Dec. 3, 2004, issue of the Star.
