Hanover’s six TD passes send Eagles soaring past John Paul II

Quarterback Bryce Hanover threw six touchdown passes Friday, five going to wideout Reid Aderholt, as the Geneva School of Boerne Eagles plastered the visiting Schertz John Paul II Guardians 48-8.

The Eagles scored 21 first-quarter points in winning their district opener, all Hanover-to-Aderholt hookups.

After John Paul punted on the opening possession, Geneva struck quickly, Hanover finding Aderholt about three steps behind the John Paul safety. The sophomore QB hit him in stride for a 71-yard TD and a 7-0 lead at the 7:02 mark.

The two hooked up again on a 55-yard TD toss on a play very similar to the first for a 14-0 lead and did so again on a 14-yard scoring strike with 51 seconds left in the first quarter. A missed extra point left the score at 20-0.

The fourth Geneva touchdown was ... yes, a Hanover-to-Aderholt TD, a 7-yarder that saw Aderholt catch the ball in the back of the end zone, getting one foot down for six.

On the following John Paul possession, Aderholt intercepted a pass near midfield, eventually leading to a Hanover-to-Brady Chandler scoring strike of 9 yards for a halftime lead of 34-0.

Hanover completed just his second start at quarterback, taking over for an injured Caleb Quitadamo three weeks ago.

The Hanover-Aderholt combo wasn’t finished yet. Playing with a running clock in the second half, Aderholt hauled in a pass and split two defenders, falling forward into the end zone for the 65-yard TD.

The final Geneva score came on a Chris Oliver 2-yard plunge with 4:07 left in the third quarter.

John Paul managed a late touchdown, a 2-yard TD run by fullback Zack Sasseville. But the outcome was never in doubt as the Eagles soared past their visitors all night.

The Eagles, 3-2 overall, travel Friday to play district favorites Holy Cross in their second district contest.
