Hounds renew rivalry with Mules in district showdown

Hounds renew rivalry with Mules in district showdown

Neither team has lost a district contest since 2019

Even though the scoreboard didn’t turn out in Boerne’s favor last week when the Greyhounds hosted East Central, BHS coach Che Hendrix said he saw a lot of positive things as the team heads into district play this week against Alamo Heights.

The Greyhounds visit the Mules Friday in the 13-5A DII opener for both. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., at historic Orem Stadium.

One of the positives that Hendrix took away from last week’s game against East Central is that his team never quit.

There were times when the Hornets opened up big leads and the Hounds could have folded up the tent to get ready for district but they rallied and almost won the game.

Boerne was down 31-14 in the first half and cut it to three points at 31-28. The Hounds were also trailing in the second half, 52-28, but rallied to score three touchdowns and make it a 3-point game at 52-49.

An onside kick with 29 seconds left was recovered by East Central and they were able to run out the clock.

“We were proud of our guys for their effort, especially down the stretch in the fourth quarter,” Hendrix said. “Our guys kept battling and staying in the fight. It got exciting at the end. They had the toughness and the grit to keep playing.”

Last Friday’s homecoming contest contained 101 points and 14 touchdowns, with 5 of those TDs coming in the final quarter, three from Boerne and two from East Central.

The Hornets were led by Isaiah Mackey who rushed for three TDs and passed for four. This week, the Greyhounds face an even better athlete in Michael Terry III, a five-star recruit, who is being pursued by everybody and seems to have limited his choices to the Texas, Oregon and Nebraska.

The Mules will move the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Terry around the field to take advantage of his versatility and Hendrix said they have to limit him as much as possible.

Terry ran for 253 yards and 3 touchdowns last week against Clemens.

“You can’t simulate his speed in practice so it’s hard to practice against it and when you see it in a game, you’re a little surprised,” Hendrix said. “We hope to learn (from the East Central game) and pursue from the proper angles and use the sidelines. You don’t see many guys tackle him solo, so hopefully we can get him in a box and keep him contained.”

Alamo Heights enters the contest ranked No. 3 in the state in 5A DII, but Hendrix said BHS has faced many good teams already, including Pieper and East Central.

“(Alamo Heights) has good players but it’ll be similar to what we’ve seen and to teams we’ve played,” he said. “We hope we can run it and keep them off the field a little bit.”

Boerne is 2-2 through non-district and could easily be 3-1 or even 4-0. Their two losses have come by a total of 5 points (38-36 and 52-49).

Hendrix said he likes where the team is as they begin league play.

“We haven’t arrived yet but we’re at a good point,” he said. “We’ve put together some really good games and have seen a lot of improvement. Our younger guys in the secondary are continuing to get better and I feel like we’ve improved as a team.”

Neither Boerne nor Alamo Heights has dropped a district game since 2019, with the Mules’ last loss in a district game coming to Boerne Champion in 2019 on Nov. 8 (42-7), while Boerne’s last district setback came to Gonzales the day before on Thursday, Nov. 7 in 2019 (23-9).

BHS and Heights used to be district foes and it was a heated rivalry. Last week, 6,107 fans showed up to watch the Greyhounds and another good crowd is expected for Friday’s contest at Orem Stadium as the two schools renew their rivalry.

Hendrix wasn’t around back when the Mules and the Greyhounds were originally in the same district but is glad to be a part of it now.

“For us, it’s a nice healthy respect, it also means a lot since it’s a district game,” he said. “You have two good teams with good programs, that’s why I love high school football. I think it’s awesome for the fans.”
