Chargers top Greyhounds in first meeting between Boerne ISD volleyball teams

A packed Greyhound Gym was rocking Friday night when the Boerne High volleyball team hosted Boerne Champion in a crosstown district match.

Tickets to the game were soldout by midweek for the first volleyball meeting between the two Boerne ISD schools.

Boerne High had a fast start on their home court playing in the electric atmosphere and captured the first game, but the Chargers settled in and won the next three to take the match.

Champion collects the 19-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17 win. The Chargers are 4-0 in district (254) and BHS falls to 2-3 in district (17-8).

Things don’t get any easier for both BISD teams. Boerne played Alamo Heights Tuesday and the Chargers were at Pieper.

BHS coach Staci Lawrence said it was a great atmosphere.

“It was amazing, it was so great to see the Boerne community come out and support,” she said. “Even though the game didn’t turn out in our favor, in the end, it was a great and fun match.”

Chargers coach Kelly McDaniel said her team came out a little nervous. They had eight hitting errors in that first set and fell behind by nine points before the Hounds closed it out with a 25-19 win.

McDaniel said she admonished her team to settle down.

“I told them to do what they needed to do and just play volleyball,” she said. “My girls are hard on themselves and I didn’t have to reiterate the next step. They were overthinking it, trying to perform so well. I just reminded them that they knew what they’re doing.”

BHS held an early lead in the second set at 3-2 but once Champion swung the momentum their way at 4-3, they never trailed the rest of the set before winning it 25-18.

The Chargers also never trailed in the third set despite a 6-0 spurt by Boerne in the middle of it before Champion recorded the 25-16 win.

Being down 2-1, the Lady Hounds were trying to take it to a fifth game and gave the Chargers all they could handle in Game 4.

The Lady Hounds were up 14-13, but Champion tied it at 14-14 all and then closed it out with an 11-3 run.

The Chargers did receive a scare when their top hitter, Ella Coleman, went down with what looked to be a foot injury.

Champion was up 21-17 at the time and McDaniel said Coleman wanted to return but the coach didn’t want to risk it. With Coleman on the bench, the Chargers closed it out with four straight to end it.

Despite the loss, Lawrence said she was proud of her squad’s effort.

“I think that was the best game we have played all year, we came out with fire and intensity,” she said. “Did we play perfect? No, but I am beyond proud of how we played, battling with heart and with each other.”

The Lady Greyhounds will make the short drive to Champion on Oct. 15 for their second-round meeting and McDaniel said she’s looking forward to the rematch.

“The kids don’t have school so I’m hoping there will be more people there,” she said.
