Eagles hit the road to Houston for a non-district contest

After a wild and crazy game with Sabinal that contained 11 ties or lead changes, the Geneva School of Boerne football team is back at it this Friday with a road trip to Houston to take on KIPP Sunnyside Academy.

Kickoff has moved up a bit to 6:30 p.m.

Late in the summer, the Eagles added this non-district game to their schedule after a district opponent dropped out of their league.

Geneva is 2-1 after last week’s 42-37 victory in the see-saw battle with the Yellowjackets. Eagles coach Grant Gaston said one thing about his school, regardless of the sport, is that they never give up.

“ Our teams never quit. No matter the score, we will not quit. It’s built into our DNA,” he said. “We fight, we finish and we love. We will always continue to fight and not quit. We’ve had quite a bit of success after being down at halftime and coming back to win, so we do not flinch when things do not start out the way we would like.”

What made Geneva’s win impressive is that they finished the game with back-up quarterback Bryce Hanover after Caleb Quitadamo went down with an injury.

Gaston said he knew Hanover had it in him.

“Bryce is a gamer. He remained calm throughout the game. He was responsible for three touchdown drives, including the game-winning drive that included a big scramble for a first down,” the coach said. “He earned the starting second-base spot on our varsity baseball team last spring as a freshman, proving he knows how to handle big assignments. Bryce works really hard in practice and all of our guys are prepared to step-in and play at a moment’s notice.”

One of Hanover’s and Quitadamo’s favorite target last Friday was Brady Chandler, who caught 12 passes for 203 yards and 3 TDs.

Gaston said Chandler is very underrated statewide as a receiver.

“I believe Brady is the best wide receiver in the state for TAPPS,” Gaston said. “He understands the game so well that he knows how to get open, how to set up routes, and find holes in the defense. He is a tireless worker in the weight room and a heck of a pole vaulter.”

KIPP Sunnyside Academy is 1-2 with a win in their opener against St. Paul and losses to Tomball Christian Home School and Cypress Christian.

“KIPP Sunnyside is very athletic and very fast at the skill positions,” Gaston said. “They have a dual threat quarterback who can take it to the house running and can equally tear apart a defense throwing the ball. They will be very tough to contain and it’ll be difficult to match their speed.”
