’Hounds host Hornets for homecoming

Boerne High’s rugged non-district schedule continues this Friday when the Greyhounds host East Central Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium.

It’s homecoming for the Greyhounds. Friday’s game kicks off at 7 p.m. and homecoming festivities take place at halftime.

Both the Greyhounds and Hornets enter Friday with 2-1 records and dropped their season openers in Week 1.

East Central lost to Harlan, but beat Roosevelt and Clark. BHS fell to Pieper in Week 1 but defeated Laredo United and last week beat Medina Valley, 31-7.

BHS was leading 21-0 in the first quarter, took a 28-0 lead into halftime and held a 31-0 lead before the Panthers tallied a late score.

The Greyhounds did a great job of not letting Medina Valley’s power ground game get on track.

“Our front linebackers, even our secondary did a great job of stepping up and playing really, disciplined assignment football,” BHS head coach Che Hendrix said. “They read their keys, played with great pad level and tackled great. Everybody did their job.”

Boerne’s defense held the Medina Valley ground game to 79 yards and only allowed 63 yards through the air.

The Greyhound offense tallied 294 total yards and was led by QB Hank Hendrix who tossed for 218 yards on 14 of 16 passing and 4 TDs.

Brooks Perez caught 2 of those TDs, while Will Traylor and Ben Bays had Star photo by Kerry Barboza

1 touchdown each.

Boerne had seven different players catch a ball and Perez snagged 7 passes for 128 yards, while Jeffrey Morrison (16-63) and Ivan Perez (14-46) led the ground game.

Coach Hendrix said East Central will be a tough opponent.

“They’re really good, they lost a game they could have easily won,” he said. “They have solid athletes everywhere and speed everywhere.” Isaiah Mackey is the EC QB and Hendrix said he’s a talented runner and passer.

“The scariest thing is when their quarterback gets on the run. He’s a problem, he really extends a lot of plays,” Hendrix said. “They want to run the ball but they’re pretty balanced.”

Zechariah Jones leads the Hornets ground game and Hendrix said Jones has 10 Division I scholarship offers. “We have to tackle him and try to keep him in a box,” the coach said.

Trying to slow down the Hornets will be Hutson Hendrix who led the team in tackles last week against MV with 10, while Ryan Hooper had 9 stops and Ty Bush finished with 8 tackles.
