How Texas Football Magazine predicts Kendall County teams will fare in 2024

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, affectionately known as “The Bible of Texas football,” is out on the newsstands and its writers have made their annual predictions.

Here’s what’s this year’s magazine staff has to say about the four 11-man football teams in Kendall County – Boerne Champion, Boerne High, Comfort High and Geneva School of Boerne.

Boerne Champion

The Chargers are picked to finish 5th in District 13-5A DI behind Smithson Valley, Pieper, New Braunfels and Wagner.

If that’s the case, they’ll miss out on a playoff spot this year, although the magazine also had the Chargers missing out on a playoff spot last year, but that prediction proved to be incorrect.

Behind Champion is Seguin, Victoria East and MacArthur.

The Chargers were hit hard by graduation and only return four starters on both sides of the ball and the magazine notes that filling those shoes will be a key this year.

The magazine notes: “While the Chargers are strong on both lines, replacing skilled players is their biggest concern. That means a tough challenge with a stacked district that includes 2023 state finalist Smithson Valley, 2023 state quarterfinalist Pieper and New Braunfels, which is coming off a strong stint in Class 6A.”

Boerne High

The Greyhounds are picked to finish second in District 13-5A DII behind favorite Alamo Heights.

Behind Boerne is Veteran’s Memorial and Victoria West as the third and fourth-place playoff teams. Kerrville Tivy is selected fifth, followed by Harlandale and McCollum.

The Hounds, which return six starters on offense and five on defense, competed for the state title two years ago as a 4A team and the magazine mentions that some of those players are still in the program.

The magazine notes: “The Greyhounds are two years removed from playing for a state championship in Class 4A Division 1, and they still have some key players from that team.

“QB (Jaxon) Baize threw for more than 5,000 yards two seasons ago as a sophomore. QB Hank Hendrix filled in while Baize was out, with a tremendous freshman season. OL (Logan) Schram (TCU commit) is one of the state’s top college football recruits. LB Hutson Hendrix is a fourth-year starter and spot plays on offense as a short-yardage/goal line running threat.”

Hendrix is listed as the magazine’s Preseason Defensive MVP.

Comfort High

Comfort is in a five-team district with some tough football schools in their league and is selected to finish fifth in District 13-3A DII.

Lexington, Blanco, Rogers and Thrall are all picked ahead of the Bobcats.

Comfort has five returners on offense and eight on defense and the magazine notes that the Bobcats have one of the top running backs around.

The magazine states: “Comfort has one of the state’s best in RB (Topper) Sterling (1,975 yards, 20 TDs rushing in 2023,) who’ll benefit from running behind OL/DL (EJ) Hernandez, ( Alexis) Padilla, (Job) Hernandez and (Matthias) Toca.”

Geneva School of Boerne

The Eagles are picked to finish second in TAPPS Division III - District 3 after one of the teams ahead of them dropped out.

Holy Cross is expected to win it, followed by Geneva after Houston Northland dropped to 6-man football, followed by Schertz John Paul II, Austin Hill Country, New Braunfels Christian and Corpus Christi John Paul II.

Geneva returns seven on offense and five on defense and will be led by lineman Reid Wilson, a two-way starter.

As the magazine notes: “Wilson is the heart and soul of the team, according to his coach, and he sets the tone on both sides of the ball. Wilson also counts as a veteran on a young but talented team that could surpass last season’s success if it coalesces during the regular season.”
