The first official day of practice for fall sports teams was Monday and all the athletes were hard at work across Kendall County.
All four 11-man football programs in the area started Monday, however it was only Champion’s freshman team that took the field Monday for the Chargers.
The Champion varsity can’t start until Monday, Aug. 12, since they held spring training in May and have to pay back a week in August.
Boerne High football is making the move up to 5A and they started Monday as the program celebrates 100 years of playing the sport.
The Geneva School of Boerne and Comfort High football teams began as well.
Blane Ellis leads the Chargers, Che Hendrix is at BHS, Jay Rieken coaches the Comfort Bobcats and Grant Gaston is in his second year at Geneva.
All four area volleyball teams began tryouts/workouts Monday and there will be two new head coaches, one at Boerne High in Staci Lawrence, and the other at Geneva, where Tami Owens takes over for the Eagles.
Kelly McDaniel starts her second season at Champion and the Comfort Deer are coached by Norma Viera.
The volleyball teams are having tryouts this week and scrimmage this weekend before playing real games next week.
Water polo at Champion and Boerne High also kicked things off this week. The Greyhounds are starting at ground zero since this is their first year of having the program and BHS will be led by Brandon Cheves, a Greyhound graduate.
Champion has had a program the last two seasons and played for the state title both years. They are coached by Scott Slay, who is in his second year with the Chargers.
BISD team tennis held tryouts last week and begin play this week. The Chargers are coached by Joey Cantu and the Greyhounds are led by Tyson Stewart.
Both BISD tennis teams have been to the state tournament in recent years and both will be 5A schools, so they’ll play against each other this year.
Cross Country has begun workouts and Sheila West will lead the Chargers and Chris Carter will coach the Greyhounds, while George Edwards is leading the Bobcats and Deer and Geneva is led by Victoria Mayfield.
Champion junior Elizabeth Leachman, who ran at the Olympic trials in June, and is the current defending 5A state champion, is expected to run for the Chargers.
