The East Texas Baptist University women’s softball team won this year’s NCAA Division III national championship and two Boerne High graduates were on the squad.
The two Ava’s – Ava Nieto and Ava “Bevo” Rodriguez – helped the Lady Tigers win the 2024 national title.
Both Nieto and Rodriguez were freshmen on this year’s Tigers team and saw action and even started in a few contests.
In the best-of-three series championship round, ETBU dropped the first game but won the final two elimination contests to claim the championship.
Belhaven took Game 1 in the championship series, 4-3, but the Lady Tigers evened it up by winning the second game, 8-2, to force a third game.
In the winner-take-all Game 3, ETBU belted three home runs to claim the title, 9-5.
The Lady Tigers recorded 17 runs and five home runs in the two elimination games to win their second national championship.
Their first national title came 14 years ago in 2010. What made this one special is that ETBU hosted this year’s tournament so they won the crown on their home field.
The Lady Tigers finished with a program-best 48 wins and went 28-1 on their home field this past season.
