SAN ANTONIO – The Champion boys wrapped up their third Region IV-5A title in four years, while Elizabeth Leachman continues her impressive sophomore season and qualified for state in three different events and won two regional titles in the process.
Leachman was the only Champion girl to qualify for state, while the Chargers had four on the boys side make it after Charlie Houck (3200), Hayden Brace (triple jump), Brooks Jones (pole vault) and Ephraim Tonn-Bourg (wheelchair events) also advanced to state.
The 5A state meet is schedule for Friday, May 3, in Austin.
Varsity Boys
The Champion boys rolled to this year’s regional title with 58 points to edge 2nd-place Seguin (50). Flour Bluff (43) was 3rd.
Wagner (42), the team that defeated the Chargers in district and tied them at Area, finished 4th in the field where at least 34 teams scored a point.
Chargers coach Kevin Brown said the boys team overcame a lot of obstacles to win this year’s title.
“We lost a lot of seniors last year, so we knew we were going to have to scratch and claw for everything we got. I give all the credit to our kids, they didn’t blink, they knew they were going to have to compete and they did so I couldn’t be more proud of them,” he said. “We had some adversity and injuries and had some guys opt out, but they pushed all year and we were fortunate to come out on top.”
Charlie Houck punched his ticket to state after he took 2nd in the 3200 with a time of 9:24.94 for 8 points, Hayden Brace won the triple jump with a mark of 45-05 for 10 points, while Brooks Jones placed 3rd in the pole vault after he cleared 15-0 and made it to state as a wild- FROM PAGE 10

card. Jones picked up 6 more team points.
Riley Wampler recorded a couple of 4th-place finishes after he was 4th in the discus with a toss of 155-0 and also came in 4th in the shot put with a throw of 53-04 for 8 more team points.
The 4x200 relay of Landon Heckman, Will Tolar, Hayden Brace and Jamarri Bowie placed 3rd for 12 points with a time of 1:28.06 but didn’t qualify as a wildcard, while the 4x100 relay of Caleb Dehart, Luis Tovar, Bowie and Brace came in 5th after recording a 3:23.30 for 4 points.
Dehart and Tovar went 3-4 in the 800 after Dehart clocked in at 1:54.79 and Tovar came in at 1:55.37 for 10 more team points.
Ephraim Tonn-Bourg competed in the 100 wheelchair and turned in a time of 17.49 and Tonn-Bourg also posted a 1:07.03 in the 400 wheelchair.
Varsity Girls
The Champion girls scored 31 points for 6th place. McAllen (77), Smithson Valley (76) and Pieper (50) went 1-2-3 in the field where at least 30 teams pointed.
Leachman earned 28 of their 31 points after she won the 3200 and 1600 and placed 2nd in the 800.
The sophomore clocked in at 10:00.88 for 1st in the 3200 and she posted a 4:37.17 in the 1600 to win the race by 19 seconds, and in the 800, Leachman turned in a 2:09.90 to come in second behind Isabel Conde De Frankenberg, who finished in 2:09.32.
Kynley Albright came in 6th in the 3200 with a time of 11:32.22 for 1 team point and Peyton Smith cleared 11-0 in the pole vault for 5th place and 2 more points.
