The Champion tennis team wrapped up its third district championship in a row and have now won 10 league titles under coach Joey Cantu.
Cantu is the only head coach Champion has had and he’s won 10 in 16 seasons since the school opened in the fall of 2008. The Chargers were at Pieper Tuesday with the district title up for grabs and Champion prevailed, 10-4.
Cantu said the girls have been strong this year, but added that the boys did their part against Pieper.
“Pieper is a good team and our boys stepped up when they needed to,” he said. “The girls have been our big strength and are one of the top girls teams in the region but the boys stepped up to help them out.”
Champion hosts Leander Glenn to open the 5A playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the Charger courts, 2 p.m.
Prior to playing Pieper, the Chargers lost to San Angelo Central last Saturday, 10-9, with the girls team winning all nine matches for Champion.
Champion enters the playoffs at 12-4 overall and were 7-0 in district.
