‘Hounds cruise to fifth straight win
Freshman quarterback Hank Hendrix threw for four touchdowns Friday, including two in the final two minutes of the first half, to lead the Boerne Greyhounds to a fifth straight win, cruising by the Uvalde Coyotes 35-14.
The Greyhounds opened District 14-4A-I play with a road win in convincing fashion. Hendrix threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone against Uvalde, (3-3, 0-1) which came into the game yielding just 127 passing yards per game.
But it became apparent that Uvalde hadn’t seen the likes of the ‘Hounds passing attack. The freshman quarterback, stepping in for the injured Jaxon Baize, completed passes of 17 and 16 yards to set up T.J. Dement’s 10-yard run in the first quarter. Carson Cooper’s first extra point made it 7-0 with 4:25 to play in the opening stanza.
Defensive back Dylan Perez nabbed the first of his two interceptions three plays later, returning the ball to the Uvalde 41-yard line. A Hendrix-to-Walker Hill 31-yard pass set up the next play, a Hendrix- to-Hendrix (Hank to his brother, Hutson) pass for a 10-yard TD and a 14-0 lead.
Uvalde responded with a 10-plus minute drive from their own 19 to the Boerne 11, but turned the ball over on downs.
Three plays later Boerne was in the end zone again. Hank Hendrix found a wide open Adam Hicks, who easily took it to the house for the 60-yard score. Cooper’s extra point gave Boerne a solid 21-0 lead with just 1:09 before half.
But Boerne still wasn’t done.
Perez picked off Uvalde quarterback Brodie Carnes again. With 49 seconds remaining before half, Dement ran for 14 yards before Hendrix hit Hicks for 28 more, moving the ball to the Uvalde 30. The freshman quarterback then hit tight end McCoy Bruce in stride down the sideline for a 30-yard TD and a 28-0 lead at halftime.
The second half started much like the first ended – Boerne for the score.
Afte kicking off to open the game, Boerne took the ball to open the second half. On its third play from scrimmage, Hendrix did it again, connecting with Michael Igbo downfield. Igbo split two defenders and found the end zone, completing the 55-yard score. Cooper’s fifth extra point of the night made it 35-0 and Coach Che Hendrix began openly substituting for some of his starters.
Uvalde scored a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters, its final points coming with 6:32 left in the game.
Boerne (5-1, 1-0) returns home this Friday to host the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen (1-5), who lost 49-6 to Fredericksburg in the District 14-4A-I opener for both teams.
