Champion mauls Matadors for homecoming, 52-19
Friday’s homecoming showdown between Champion and Seguin at Boerne ISD Stadium turned into a blowout as the Chargers rolled past the Matadors.
Champion and Seguin entered Friday’s contest undefeated in district play but it didn’t take Champion long to swing the momentum in their direction, scoring the first five times they had the ball on their way to a 52-19 sacking of Seguin.
Champion quarterback Jordan Ballin had a night to remember after he hit the trifecta and scored three different ways. Ballin tossed four touchdown passes, ran for one and caught another.
The senior QB said he wasn’t even aware that he had scored three different ways until later in the game.
“I didn’t realize it until we went into the half,” he said. “We work on these things as a team and we execute and things like that happen when you don’t think about it and go out and play for each other.”
The Chargers were clicking from the start and didn’t show any rust coming off their bye week.
Ballin hit Kaleb Krause on Champion’s first drive on a 26-yard TD pass just four plays into the contest.
Ballin then found Campbell Deberry on a 27-yard scoring strike on Champion’s next drive for a 14-0 lead after the Nathan Bell PAT.
On the next Charger possession, the home team used a trick play to score. Ballin took the snap, pitched it to Cameron Logan, who then pitched it to Brock Browning. From there, Browning found a wide-open Ballin in the end zone for a 46-yard score to make it 21-0.
Champion kept their foot on the gas pedal and went with an onside kick and recovered it. Ballin hooked up with Deberry again and it was 28-0. The Chargers had scored four times, the game was still in the first quarter, and the Matadors still didn’t have a first down in the contest at that point.
Seguin finally got on the board early in the second quarter but the Chargers responded with a Ballin to Sawyer Bolli 25-yard touchdown pass for the 35-7 lead.
Later in the second quarter, Ballin completed the hat trick after he broke loose on a 60-yard scramble and took it to the house for the 42-7 lead by halftime.
Ballin said he was a bit surprised by how well they were playing against a good Seguin team.
“It was very surprising, but it was needed for momentum,” he said.
While it may have surprised Ballin, Champion’s domination of the Matadors didn’t surprise its head coach Blane Ellis.
“I know our guys and we’ve stacked a bunch of good practices together and I’m not going to say I was surprised by it,” Ellis said.
In the third quarter, Bell booted a 30-yard field, and after Seguin scored a touchdown, Bolli took the kickoff 80 yards for a score to bump the lead to 52-13.
With such a big lead, Ellis removed his starters by the start of the fourth quarter in what was supposed to be a close contest.
The Matadors fought to the end and scored once more to make it 52-19. The 19 points Seguin scored was a season low for them. They came into town with 57-0 and 52-19 district wins under their belt.
Champion improves to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in district, while Seguin drops to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in district.
The Chargers are at Wagner Friday and are off to their best start since 2014.
“We knew we were capable of playing like this but we have to act like we’re 0-0 and go 1-0 each week,” Ballin said. “We’re blessed to be 6-0 and it’s exciting, we’re ready to keep the train rolling.”
