Eagles fly away with 70-45 victory to set up showdown for district title

Geneva School of Boerne won a shootout with Schertz John Paul II Friday night at Steele High School.

Geneva’s 70-45 victory and the Holy Cross 72-6 win over Corpus Christi John Paul II sets up a showdown Friday night in Boerne for this year’s district title between the Eagles and Knights.

Both Geneva and Holy Cross are 2-0 entering Friday’s regular-season finale. The Eagles are 6-3 overall and have won four straight.

Geneva coach Grant Gaston said he doesn’t mind a three-game district schedule, especially since he can’t control it.

“I haven’t really thought much about the length of our district schedule. Like all coaches, we just play one week at a time against the opponent in front of us,” he said. “It looks like we’ll be in a larger district next year with the new TAPPS realignment.

“The biggest benefit of a larger district schedule is it makes scheduling non-district games a lot easier since you are looking to fill fewer spots,” he said.

In its last few games, the Eagles usually have a strong third quarter, but in Friday’s tussle they did a lot of damage in the second quarter.

It was tied 7-7 when the second stanza started but Geneva outscored Schertz JP II, 35-14, in the period to take a 42-21 lead into the break.

Both teams continued to score in the second half and the Schertz school actually outscored Geneva in the third quarter but only by two points, 16-14, and the Eagles took a 56-37 lead into the final period.

Geneva kept up the pace and tallied two more touchdowns, while JP II hit a touchdown pass with less than a minute left for the final of 70-45.

Geneva quarterback Jacob Rosenstiel had a strong game running the ball and tallied 221 yards on the ground, while KP Fitzgerald rushed for 80 and caught another 142 yards through the air for more than 200 scrimmage yards.

Noah Brunsvold recorded 64 rushing and 52 receiving yards, Jon-Michael Raimondo tallied 23 yards on the ground and 52 more receiving, Brady Chandler totaled 55 yards in receptions and Caleb Quitadamo had 7 receiving yards as the Geneva offense rolled to 665 yards from scrimmage on 88 plays.
