State-ranked Poth pounces on Bobcats

The Comfort football team faced a tough task Friday night when they took on district favorite and No. 6 state-ranked Poth on the road.

Comfort had a chance at the district title entering Friday’s contest but needed a win. However, Poth lived up to its ranking as they recorded a 43-7 win over the Bobcats.

Comfort slips to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in district. The Bobcats host South San West Campus Friday to close out the regular season as they look to secure third place in 15-3A DII.

Poth took control of the game early and scored less than three minutes in, on a 49-yard run for the 8-0 lead.

The Pirates tacked on two more first-quarter scores and the lead ballooned to 23-0 before the period ended.

In the second stanza, Poth went to the air for a short 5-yard touchdown pass and bumped the lead to 30-0, which is where it stood at halftime.

After the break, the Pirates scored early in the third quarter on a short run to make it 37-0 with 9:30 left in the period.

Later in the quarter, Poth went deep and completed a 57-yard touchdown pass and the lead was 43-0 with 4:25 remaining in the third.

The Pirates eased off the gas pedal in the final quarter and didn’t score, while the Bobcats were able to avoid the shutout after they tallied a touchdown late in the game.

Mason West went north to south and scrambled into the end zone with 2:58 remaining in the game. Julio Lopez-Torres booted the extra point to make it 43-7, which is where it ended.
