Chargers win 5A regional title, BHS tripped up by Texans in 4A finals
SAN ANTONIO – One Boerne ISD tennis team will play at this year’s 5A state tournament, while another BISD squad was one win away from qualifying for the 4A state tourney.
Both the Chargers and Greyhounds qualified for their respective regional championship in San Antonio and played Friday with state berths on the line.
Champion
Champion defeated Alamo Heights in the 5A finals at the NEISD Blossom courts, while Wimberley knocked off Boerne in the 4A finals at NISD.
The Chargers were up 4-3 after doubles and then the teams had to play all 12 singles match – 6 boys and 6 girls.
It was tied 9-9 and came down to the final match that Greta Clauss won at No. 6 girls singles to clinch it.
Champion (17-4) plays against undefeated Austin LASA (19-0) Wednesday in the state semifinals in Waco, 11:30 a.m.
Wednesday’s winner plays Thursday, 3 p.m. in the state finals. Frisco Centennial (21-2) and Amarillo (21-4) are on the other side of the bracket and play in the other semis.
This is Champion’s fifth appearance at the state tournament. They’ve qualified for state in 2008, 09, 10, 14 and again this year. The Chargers have finished second three times for silver and were third the other time for bronze.
Boerne
Boerne took on Wimberley in last Friday’s Region IV-4A finals at NS Anne Marie and fell behind early.
BHS struggled in doubles play and was trailing the Texans, 6-1, after all seven doubles matches were completed.
The Greyhounds made a run of it in singles but just had too high of a mountain to climb.
Wimberley just needed three of 12 wins in singles, while the Hounds had to come up with 9 wins in the 12 matches.
Boerne did win 6 matches in singles as opposed to 3 for the Texans but couldn’t catch Wimberley, which had such a big lead after doubles.
Boerne was the regional champs last year and finishes this season with a record of 15-4.
