Geneva continues district play Friday in Schertz
It hasn’t always been the case, but the Geneva School of Boerne football team has turned into a second-half team and it served them well last Friday when the Eagles defeated Corpus Christi John Paul II with a strong second half to open district.
Geneva continues TAPPS 3-III action Friday against another John Paul II school, this one in Schertz. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Schertz.
Last week’s game at CC JP II was tied 14-14 at halftime but the Eagles outscored the Centurions, 43-0, for the 57-14 victory.
In its game before that, Geneva was down 28-7 at halftime against Brentwood Christian but scored 42 points in the second half and overtime to win.
In both comebacks, the Eagles had particularly strong third quarters and scored 29 points both times.
Geneva coach Grant Gaston said they haven’t always been a second-half team.
“It’s funny, earlier in the year we were more explosive early in games, but struggled to score in the third quarter,” he said. “Now it’s the opposite. I think for (last week), we were just shaking off the rust a little bit.”
Gaston said another reason they’ve played so well in the second half is because of the adjustments the staff is making at halftime.
“A lot of it stems from our coaching staff spending more time together throughout the season and being on the same page in making adjustments,” he said. “There is a comfort level in communication with what we want to do and what we can do based on what the defense is giving us.”
In last week’s game, Jacob Rosenstiel completed 15 of 21 passes for 3 TDs and Caleb Quitadamo was 3 for 3 with a touchdown.
Rosenstiel is closing in on 2,000 air yards and has 1,882 with 24 passing touchdowns heading into Friday.
Also in last Friday’s game, KP Fitzgerald caught 9 passes for 95 yards and 2 scores, Brady Chandler hauled in 2 passes for 58 yards and 1 TD, while JonMichael Raimondo snagged 6 passes for 74 yards and score.
Rosenstiel ran the ball 12 times for 112 yards and a touchdown, while Fitzgerald and Noah Brunsvold also had rushing TDs.
Friday’s opponent, Schertz JP II dropped its district opener last Friday to Holy Cross, 57-13, but Gaston said they can’t overlook anybody since they only have three district games.
“Schertz JPII is very adept at throwing the ball. They will spread you out and use quads, empty, and other irregular formations to create favorable matchups,” he said. “They have improved quite a bit over the season and are a lot more dangerous than their record may indicate.”
The Schertz school is 2-7 overall (0-1), while the Eagles are 5-3 (1-0).
