Greyhounds shoot down Rockets, 63-0

Boerne High took care of business Thursday when the Greyhounds hosted Kennedy in a district contest at BISD Stadium.

Boerne scuttled the Rockets 63-0 to stay perfect in district at 3-0. The Hounds have won seven straight and are 7-1 overall.

BHS is home Friday to host Somerset and close out its three-game homestand.

The Greyhounds were heavy favorites going into the Thursday’s game but coach Che Hendrix said it’s not who they play, but rather how they play and added that he was pleased with their performance.

“We executed at a high level on both sides of the ball and special teams. It’s nice when you come out and execute and play well,” he said. “We’re not worried about who we’re playing, just executing and working on things that will pay off down the road.”

Thursday’s contest saw the return of quarterback Jaxon Baize, who was coming back from an injury suffered in the first game of the season.

Baize said it was good to be back on the field for the first time in about two months. He threw two touchdowns and one interception.

“It was super exciting to actually be out on the field out here with my brothers. It was great to have a win like that and boost the confidence in the first game back,” he said. “Being on the sideline was tough but I’m thankful to my teammates that helped me out and helped me get through it.”

Baize threw his two TD passes in the first quarter, both to Brooks Perez, that went for 40 and 48 yards.

Hutson Hendrix finished with a defensive touchdown for the second game in a row and then T.J. Dement ran for an 8-yard touchdown to give the Hounds a 28-0 lead in the first quarter after Carson Cooper made all four extra points.

Baize was being eased back into action and Hank Hendrix entered in the second and tossed a touchdown pass to Zachary Rackler for the 35-0 advantage.

Later in the quarter, Michael Igbo bolted for an 18-yard run into the end zone to help BHS close out the first half with a 42-0 lead.

At some point in the second quarter, it turned into a running clock situation the rest of the way, limiting possessions for both teams, especially in the second half.

In fact, the Rockets didn’t have one offensive snap in the third quarter and only had one possession over the last two stanzas.

BHS received the second- half kickoff and eventually punted but a Rockets fumble on the punt was recovered by Carson Coffland to give Boerne the ball back at the JFK 33.

Seven plays later, Hank Hendrix tossed a short pass to Danilo Gonzalez for another score and the Hounds were up 49-0 after the Cooper kick.

In the fourth, the Rockets gave the ball back on loss of downs at their own 32 on their only possession of the half and Ivan Perez added to the Boerne lead four plays later with a 4-yard touchdown run for the 56-0 lead.

The Rockets fumbled on the ensuing kickoff and the Hounds had one final possession and Ivan Perez scored again on another short run to cap the scoring and make it 63-0.
