Comfort High welcomes Dilley to Bobcat Stadium

When all else fails, just go back to the basics.

That was Comfort’s approach last week when the Comfort football team fell behind at Karnes City, 7-6.

After the Bobcats went back to the basics, they settled down and scored 43 unanswered points on their way to a 49-7 victory over the Badgers.

“We got back to basics and got back to doing what we needed to do,” Comfort coach Jay Rieken said. “We finally settled down and starting moving the ball. We got back to our base and got back to what we do.”

Comfort’s win keeps them unbeaten in district at 3-0 (4-3 overall) and sets up Friday’s showdown with Dilley. Kickoff is set for Friday at Bobcat Stadium, 7:30 p.m.

The Wolves are also playing well to stand at 3-1 in district (they haven’t had their bye week yet). Dilley’s only 15-3A DII loss came to district-favorite Poth in overtime, 10-7.

“They have a lot of speed and their defense flies around. Offensively, they have some big boys and run right at you,” Rieken said about Dilley. “They’re doing a good job and played Poth to an overtime game, which tells you something. It should be a physical game.”

Comfort’s defense has turned st ingy lately and only surrendered 23 combined points in three district games. After yielding 16 to Nixon- Smiley, they blanked Natalia and only gave up 7 to Karnes City last Friday.

“The defense played well again,” Rieken said. “We did give up a score after we made a couple of mistakes and they capitalized.”

With Comfort and Poth at 3-0 and Dilley at 3-1, seeding in the district will be determined in the next few weeks. After playing Dilley, the Bobcats host Poth in back-to-back tough games.

“The few next weeks are important for us. It’s all about seeding for us,” the coach said. “These are big games for us, that’s how we’re taking it. We have to approach it like these are playoff games.”

Rieken said he likes how his team is playing on both sides of the ball as they head down the stretch. He added that all the changes he made as the new head coach are starting to pay off.

“Everything was new at the beginning but two scrimmages and seven games into it, they’re getting comfortable,” he said. “We didn’t bombard them and added new stuff weekly and now that they understand it, we’re just trying to play fast.”

Rieken said starting quarterback Micah Nye, who left the Karnes City game with an injury, is fine and is expected to start this Friday.
