Greyhounds meet JFK on a short week
Boerne High has a short week and will take the field Thursday at Boerne ISD Stadium when the Greyhounds host Kennedy.
Kickoff for Thursday’s district contest is 7 p.m.
BHS coach Che Hendrix said he doesn’t mind a short week for a lot of different reasons.
“At this point of the season it’s nice to mix in a Thursday game, it kind of gives you a sense of urgency during the week and it’s a break from the monotony,” he said. “Plus it gives us a long weekend and gives us an extra day to prepare for Somerset.”
The Hounds host Somerset next Friday as part of a threegame homestand but before facing the Bulldogs, they’ll have to take care of the Rockets this week.
One piece of good news for the Greyhounds is that they should get Jaxon Baize back this week after the quarterback suffered a foot injury in the season opener at Flour Bluff.
After Baize went down, freshman Hank Hendrix took over as the starting QB and has done well, but Coach Hendrix said the job belongs to Baize.
“It’s the right move, his health is the first priority, but he looks good and has been throwing a lot. To get him back and get in a few games is huge so it’s good timing,” said the coach, who added that Hank will stay on the varsity and be the backup. “We’ll get Jaxon in and let him shake the rust off.”
Baize suited up last week against Memorial but didn’t play and they didn’t really need him. The Hounds were up 21-0 in the first quarter and rolled past the Minutemen 42-0.
Boerne could have scored a lot more, but the game went to a running clock in the second half and was over by 8:45 p.m.
Even in the first half, the Hounds were driving and had and had a chance at a touchdown right before the half, but let the clock expire.
In a game like that, Coach Hendrix said they just focus on themselves.
“We use the same approach, our deal is to continue to play fast and at a high level,” he said. “It’s important to get off to a fast start, to improve what we’re doing. It’s not who we play, it’s how we play.”
The Hounds played well last Friday and scored rushing, receiving, special teams and a defensive touchdown.
Hutson Hendrix had the defensive touchdown after the ball bounced right into his lap for a scoop and score after a hard hit, while McCoy Bruce returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown.
“It’s nice to score different ways, especially with defense and special teams,” Coach Hendrix said. “It makes you tough to beat.”
Hank Hendrix had a rushing touchdown, TJ Dement added two rushing scores, while Matthew Garrison scored a receiving TD on a pass from Hank Hendrix.
