Chargers host district foe Seguin for homecoming

Boerne Champion resumes district play Friday when the Chargers welcome the Matadors of Seguin for its 2023 homecoming game.

The Chargers were 2-0 in District 12-5A DI before heading into their bye week last Friday and look to pick up where they left off.

In district play, Champion edged New Braunfels Canyon with a late kick and then beat up Buda Hays the following week before getting last Friday off.

Chargers coach Blane Ellis said the bye came at a good time even though they had been playing well. He added that it gave them a chance to tweak a few things.

“We got healthy and feel good about getting our guys back,” said Ellis, who noted that they should get three or four players back for Friday’s game. “We also looked at things we needed to clean up and took our time to focus on the fundamentals.” Champion is 5-0 and 2-0 in district, while Seguin is 2-3 overall but they are also 2-0 in league play.

The Matadors can score and tallied 48 and 59 points in losses to Alamo Heights and Laredo United. In their two district wins against Kyle Lehman and MacArthur, Seguin scored 55 and 57 points.

'They do a good job offensively, their running back from last year is back and he’s a good running back and a pretty explosive guy,” the coach said. “They’re pretty balanced and have scored a lot of points this year so we have to stop the run first.”

While the Matadors can score, they’ve also given up a lot of points. They yielded 51 to Alamo Heights, 45 to New Braunfels and 62 to Laredo United.

“They give up a lot of points but they do some good stuff,” Ellis said.

This will be Champion’s third game at home this season and in their two previous contests at BISD Stadium, the Chargers were trailing at halftime of both and had to put together furious rallies to defeat NB Canyon and Eagle Pass.

Ellis said as they head down the stretch play of their season, they need to put together consistent halves at home.

“We need to put a full game together, we need a good first half and good second half,” he said. “We need to execute early and that way we’re not having to scratch and claw at the end. We’re willing and able to do that but if we execute early then we don’t have to.”

It’s homecoming week for the Chargers and Ellis said everyone is excited.

“It should be a good crowd and a good game,” he said.
