Geneva hosts Brentwood Christian Thursday to close out non-district

The end of Geneva’s non-district football schedule is finally here. Because they are in a small district with only three other teams, they have to play seven non-district games.

Geneva’s seventh and final non-district contest is this Thursday in Boerne when the Eagles host Brentwood Christian, 7 p.m.

After Thursday’s game, the Eagles are off until Oct. 20 then they visit Corpus Christi John Paul II to open league play.

It’s been a tough seven- week stretch but Geneva football coach Grant Gaston said they’re holding up pretty good as far as injuries even though they’ve played seven straight games and have a lot of two-way players.

“We’re doing really well on the injury front,” he said. “We purposefully change up our practice format a bit in the middle of the season to help keep guys fresh during the grind in anticipation of district play beginning soon.”

Geneva is coming off a 49-28 win over Milano last Friday. The Eagles were up 21-0 in the first quarter and leading 42-7 at halftime.

Gaston started moving players in and out and Milano ended the game by scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Geneva QB Jacob Rosenstiel finished last week’s game with three rushing and three passing touchdowns. He threw for 160 yards and ran for 123 on 11 carries for 283 total yards of offense.

Gaston said Rosenstiel, or “Rosie” as he is affectionately known, has done a great job at the quarterback spot this year.

“Rosie is absolutely a team leader for us. He is a selfless and team-first leader and worker,” the coach said. “Each week he gets more and more comfortable with the offense and continues to make good decisions based on the defensive looks we’re getting.”

The Eagles are 3-3, while Brentwood Christian is 5-1 and just suffered its first loss of the season last Friday with a one-point setback to Shiner St. Paul, 28-27.

Shiner St. Paul defeated Geneva the previous week in a shootout, 49-43.

Brentwood Christian has a new coach and Gaston said he’s doing great with the Bears.

“Coach Maxfield is doing a tremendous job at Brentwood Christian in his first year there,” he said. “They have a dominating run game and they are very athletic. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

After this week’s game and the break next weekend, the Eagles are at Corpus Christi John Paul II, then play at Schertz John Paul II and finally home to host Holy Cross to close out the regular season.
