Hounds, Chargers return to action after bye

Boerne opens district at Uvalde

After a week off, the Boerne High football team will hit the road this Friday with a visit to Uvalde to open District 14-4A DI action.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Honey Bowl in Uvalde.

After Friday, the Hounds are home for three straight. The contest in Uvalde is their fifth road game against only one home game so far.

Boerne coach Che Hendrix said the team is rested and ready to go.

“We had some really good practices and did a good job of staying focused,” he said. “We worked on conditioning and added a few tweaks, it was a good reset.”

Hendrix added that the break helped them get a little healthier and noted that they’ll get some players back this week.

“We got a couple of guys healthy,” he said. “We should have three starters back.”

The Greyhounds are 4-1 and have won four straight. After dropping their season opener at Flour Bluff, Boerne has reeled off wins against Pleasanton, Antonian, Gregory-Portland and Salado and has scored 47, 42, 50 and 41 in those four wins.

Hendrix said he likes the team’s tempo, especially on offense, and wants to continue that in district.

“I love the tempo and the pace we play at,” he said. “We really challenged our guys to get better. I like seeing us execute and play at a fast pace.”

Uvalde is 3-2 through non-district with wins over Eagle Pass Winn, Poteet and Crystal City. They lost to Devine and Jefferson.

Hendrix said the Uvalde defense has played well and helped the Coyotes overall. The Uvalde “D” only allowed 14 points to Winn, 7 to Crystal City and shutout Poteet so they’ve only allowed 21 points in their three wins.

In their two losses, the Coyotes only surrendered 25 and 28 points to Jefferson and Devine.

“They have a lot of returning starters on defense and played some good games,” Hendrix said. “Defensively is where they’ve taken some strides.”

Everybody in the district can hit the reset button and is 0-0 in league play that starts this Friday.

After Uvalde, the Hounds play Memorial, Kennedy and Somerset at home and then visit Fredericksburg to close out the regular season.

Hendrix said he’s hoping for a strong finish down the stretch.

“We want to continue to build our team and to play fast,” he said.
