Greyhounds on a roll going into the break

The Boerne High football team closed out non-district play with last Friday’s game at Salado. BHS is off this weekend and then opens 14-4A DI action at the Honey Bowl in Uvalde Oct. 6.

After that, the Hounds are home for three straight against Memorial, Kennedy and Somerset before visiting Fredericksburg to close out the regular season.

The Greyhounds went 4-1 through non-district and have won four straight after dropping their opener at Flour Bluff, 42-35.

BHS coach Che Hendrix said he’s pleased with how the team is playing as they enter their bye week.

“I’m pretty happy with where we are, we’ve played different style teams and I like how we’re playing,” he said. “You worry about the bye and losing momentum. You don’t want to take a step backwards, but we’ve had some injuries and we’re going to add a few things.”

The Greyhounds lost starting QB Jaxon Baize to a foot injury in the opener but freshman Hank Hendrix has done a nice job filling in and has thrown for 7 touchdowns in the last two games and 10 TDs since being named the starter by the second game.

Another player who has emerged offensively has been senior running back Michael Igbo. Before last’s Friday’s 41-17 win at Salado, Coach Hendrix said in a pre-game interview to keep an eye on Igbo.

Sure enough, as if on cue, Igbo ran for two touchdowns in the third quarter – one for 55 yards – and finished the game with 110 yards on just 11 carries.

Coach Hendrix said T.J. Dement will be the starter but added that Igbo has earned playing time and not just when it’s a blowout.

“I thought he was going to have a break-out game because he’s really come on in practice,” the coach said. “It allows us to put them both in the backfield at the same time and lets them play together more. We can have multiple running backs as the year progresses and do more with them.”

Through five games, Hutson Hendrix leads the team in tackles with 49, Javi Benavides has 42 tackles, while Braden Bays has 3 interceptions and McCoy Bruce and Charlie Stahl have 2 picks each.

Coach Hendrix has always maintained that they have a bye week and not an off week. He added that they’ll work, but manage it as they try to get healthy. They had four starters out last week.

“The byes always seem to come at a good time to heal up,” Hendrix said. “We’ll back off and won’t bang as much, but it’ll be a good week for us. We’ll have a team activity Wednesday, which is always a lot of fun.”

As the teams in District 14-4A DI get ready to start league play after the break, Coach Hendrix said they’ll focus on getting better.

“We’ll take a hard look and self-scout. We’ll add a few wrinkles and prepare for our district opponents,” he said. “We’re playing fast paced and physical and I love our pace and how we’re playing. This is a good group of kids.”
