Geneva hits the road to take on Milano
The Geneva School of Boerne football team will continue its long non-district schedule this Friday with a road trip to Milano.
Game time is 7 p.m. at Milano, located between Austin and College Station.
Milano is 3-1 and was 3-0 before suffering its first loss last week at Cypress Christian to stand at 3-1.
Geneva enters the contest at 2-3 overall and is coming off a 49-43 setback to Shiner St. Paul last Friday.
Geneva coach Grant Gaston said Milano is like a lot of squads they’ve played this year.
“They are similar to several teams we’ve played in that they feature a strong power run game,” he said.
The 43 points the Eagles scored last week is the second most this season. They did have 63 in their opener but the 43 was the most they’ve scored in a competitive game.
Gaston said they should have had more.
“Offensively, we came out a little bit flat and missed several opportunities to score more points,” he said. “Our expectation is to score a touchdown on every drive. We haven’t met that expectation yet – but we get closer every week.”
Geneva dropped last week’s game despite a great effort, especially late in the contest. The Eagles scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and lost by 6 points despite being down at one point, 42-22.
Gaston said he knew they would put up a fight.
“I never doubt the grit and fight from our players. They refuse to quit,” he said. “We believe in the ABCs (Always-Be-Competing) at Geneva. That competitive spirit shows up in every game and will pay dividends as the season progresses.”
Eagles QB Jacob Rosenstiel tossed 5 TD passes last week and had 352 yards through the air against only one interception.
K.P. Fitzgerald led the team in receptions and receiving yards after he hauled in 11 catches for 157 yards to go with two scores. JonMichael Raimondo snagged 3 catches for 71 yards and also recorded 2 TDs, while Brady Chandler made 5 catches for 86 yards and a score.
The Eagles only rushed for 55 yards as the game script forced them to throw more.
Rosenstiel led the ground game with 9 carries for 34 yards and Josh Dennis had 4 totes for 13 yards and a touchdown.
Rosenstiel has thrown for 1,241 yards and 15 touchdowns this season and is also the team’s leading rusher, while Fitzgerald is the top receiver with 634 receptions on 46 catches and 8 TDs.
Geneva has seven non-district games and still has two more on the schedule counting Friday’s game at Milano.
They host Brentwood Christian next week before going on bye and then open district Oct. 20 in Corpus Christi against John Paul II.
Gaston said there is still a lot to work on between now and then.
“We need to improve our tackling defensively,” he said. “We’re a young team featuring a lot of sophomores, so game experience each week helps tremendously.”
