Sterling turns in golden performance for Bobcats
Comfort RB rushes for 382 yards to set school record
Comfort sophomore running back Topper Sterling put on quite a show Friday night when the Bobcats opened district play at Nixon-Smiley.
Sterling ran all over the Nixon-Smiley defense and finished the game with a school record 382 rushing yards on just 27 carries to help the Bobcats gallop past the Mustangs, 41-16.
Comfort improves to 2-3 overall and starts 15-3A DII action at 1-0. The Bobcats have won two in a row and look to keep the momentum going when they play Natalia at home Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Sterling heated up immediately and scored on a 34-yard run less than a minute into the contest for the quick 8-0 lead.
After a Micah Nye 1-yard plunge for a TD bumped the lead to 14-0, Sterling tacked on two more rushing touchdowns on runs of 11 and 8 yards for the 30-0 advantage.
Comfort was up 30-8 at the break after Nixon- Smiley scored late in the first half but Sterling had already rushed for 216 yards in the first two quarters.
The Mustangs recorded their second score of the game to make it 30-16 early in third quarter but the Bobcats responded with the final two touchdowns of the night.
Sterling found the end zone for the fourth time early in the fourth and then Gio Lopez ran it in from the 11-yard line with 5:43 left in the game for the 43-16 score, which is where it stayed until the final buzzer.
