Boerne tosses Salado, 41-17

Salado may have been celebrating its homecoming Friday night when the Boerne High football team came for a visit but it was the Greyhounds that celebrated the win after they trounced the Eagles, 41-17.

BHS improves to 4-1 overall and is off this coming Friday. After the break, they’ll open district play Oct. 6 in the Honey Bowl against Uvalde.

The Greyhounds were consistent in the first half and scored 10 points in each of the first two quarters.

Carson Cooper capped Boerne’s first drive with a 36-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead late in the opening stanza.

After an interception by Boerne linebacker Hutson Hendrix on Salado’s next drive, the Hounds took advantage of a short field.

T.J. Dement punched it in six plays later on a 15-yard run with 1:08 remaining in the quarter and the 10-0 advantage.

Cooper bumped the Boerne lead to 13-0 with another field goal early in the second, this one from 21 yards for the 13-0 edge.

Salado finally got on the board late in the period with a field goal of its own to trim the lead to 13-3, but the Hounds ended the first half with a touchdown pass.

Hank Hendrix hit McCoy Bruce on a 58-yard strike with 52 seconds before the break and Boerne cruised into halftime with a 20-3 lead.

After the Salado homecoming festivities at halftime, the third quarter turned into the Michael Igbo show.

The senior running back scored on Boerne’s first drive of the half with a 15-yard gallop into the end zone to open up a 27-3 lead.

Later in the quarter, Igbo capped a 1-play drive with a 55-yard burst up the middle for his second TD of the night.

Sandwiched between the two Igbo running scores was a Luke Law quarterback keeper for Salado’s first touchdown of the night.

The third quarter ended with Brooks Perez hauling in another long Hank Hendrix touchdown pass, this one for 44 yards, to give Boerne the 41-10 lead after the Cooper extra point.

From there, Boerne went into ball-control mode and were moving players in and out of the game. Ty Bush intercepted a Salado pass in the fourth but the Hounds weren’t really trying to score at that point, they just wanted to burn some clock and get on the bus.

Salado added a late touchdown in the game that came on an 8-yard pass with 2:07 left to complete the scoring and give Boerne the 41-17 victory.
