A recent rash of vehicle break-ins and thefts has Boerne authorities issuing safety reminders and precautions for its citizens.
The weekend of Aug. 26-27 saw double-digit reports of vehicles broken into, with multiple reports coming from residents on Hunters Creek, Maxwell Drive and Del Mar Road, in and around the Curry Creek subdivision.
Since Memorial Day, Boerne Police have responded to 21 stolen vehicles and 29 vehicle burglaries, according to Chris Shadrock, Boerne director of communications.
“In the last two weeks (prior to Sept. 5), there have been seven reported stolen vehicles and 18 burglaries,” Shadrock said. “There have been no arrests made in the recent incidents and we continue to work with our neighboring law enforcement agencies to locate the stolen vehicles and apprehend the suspects.”
Residents in the affected area woke up Aug. 27 to find their vehicles had been entered. Nine callers rang police between 5:48 and 9:13 a.m. to report their vehicles had been ransacked, with one reporting the theft of a pistol. Two residents, on Dover Downs and Hidden Haven Drive, reported their vehicles as stolen.
Unfortunately, this type of crime is not new to Boerne and is common across Texas.
“Over the past several years, we have seen events where suspect(s) target multiple vehicles in a single night,” Shadrock said. “And, in almost all instances, the vehicles were not locked.”
He said in all instances of stolen vehicles, “the vehicle’s owner has left the key fob inside their automobile. As always, we encourage our residents to take all valuables inside at night, including weapons and key fobs, and to lock their doors,” he said.
Shadrock said the Boerne Police Department does have its patrol officers increase their presence in areas that are commonly impacted.
By following a few crime prevention tips, citizens can reduce the number of vehicle break-ins in our community:
• If available, always park your vehicle in a locked garage.
• Do not leave your key fobs or firearms inside your vehicle.
• Lock your vehicle doors and set any alarm or anti-theft device that is installed on your vehicle.
• Park in well-lit areas. At home, park your vehicle near porch lights. If you cannot park in a garage, install motion detection lights, which will illuminate your driveway at night.
• Remove visible items from inside your cars such as: Cash, laptops, laptop cords, handbags-backpacks-duffel bags, wallets, credit cards, cellphones, briefcases, golf clubs, tools, shopping bags and even empty boxes.
At least two of the victims of the late-night Aug. 26, or early-morning Aug. 27 break-ins told police they have video footage of the incidents. Shadrock said police were working with those individuals, to obtain any information they could about the perpetrators.
Residents can always call Kendall County Crime Stoppers at 1-800348-5323 to report an anonymous tip if you have information on vehicle break-ins or any other crime. Callers will not be asked for their name or other identification.
