The identity of a 25-year-old Afghani refugee who drowned Sunday in Boerne City Lake was released Tuesday.
The Boerne Fire Department Water Rescue Team, with assistance from the Texas Game Wardens, on Monday recovered the body of Mohammad Salem of San Antonio, from a cove near a boat ramp on the north side of lake.
Initial calls to 911 came in just before 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed Salem was walking in water approximately 3-4 feet deep when he reached a drop off where the water becomes 20 feet deep.
Unaware of the dropoff, Salem went under the surface and did not resurface. Several bystanders attempted to rescue the man but were unsuccessful.
City officials said others who made the trip from San Antonio, a group of about 10-15 people, said Salem could not swim, nor could the other person in the water at the time Salem went under.
Alcohol was not a factor in the drowning, authorities said.
With the assistance of sonar technology, a recovery effort began Sunday afternoon but was suspended due to darkness. The search resumed Monday.
Boerne City Lake was reopened later Monday after the body was recovered and the investigation was complete.
Justice of the Peace Michelle Van-Stavern ordered an autopsy; Salem’s body was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner.
