The Kendall County Historical Commission (KCHC) has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Texas Historical Commission for managing history and preservation programs that enrich Texas communities.

KCHC is an appointed volunteer organization responsible for advocating for and preserving local history, including the development and placement of historical markers.

The award affirms historical commissions for managing well-rounded history and preservation related programs that enrich Texas communities. The Kendall County Commissioners Court serves as the organization’s governing body.

One critical aspect of historical commissions is the process of choosing sites and developing marker applications for consideration. The organization also monitors the condition of all existing markers in Kendall County.

In November 2022, KCHC placed its most recent historical marker on Hosack Street & School Street, detailing the history of the Camino Real de San Saba (Camino Viejo) in the county. Currently, markers for The Holekamp House, Casper Sueltenfuss, and The Battle of Walker's Creek are in process for placement in the next two years.

With volunteer membership growing, KCHC has formed new committees including: a Cemetery Committee to clean, repair and document headstones; the Oral History Project to record, share, and preserve personal stories of historical interest; the Texas Treasures Project to identify and recognize businesses that have been part of the community for 50 years; and the Liaison Committee to interact with historical commissions in adjacent counties.

“Kendall County has an incredibly vibrant history and there is still much to uncover,” Robin Stauber, chair, said. “We are committed to ensuring those histories are preserved and to uncovering new stories and sharing that heritage with everyone.”
