SAN ANTONIO -- Guide Dogs of Texas, a statewide organization that trains and places purpose-bred guide dogs with Texans who are blind or have low vision, needs “puppy raisers.”
Due to the high demand for guide dogs across the state, Guide Dogs of Texas (GDTX) is working to increase the number of puppies in its puppy training program. As a result, more volunteer puppy raisers are needed as soon as possible.
Volunteer puppy raisers rear and socialize puppies from the age of 8 weeks to 16-20 months in the volunteer’s home. The pup does get to accompany the volunteer to work or school.
Puppy raising requires a 12month commitment. The volunteer position does receive ongoing professional training. Food and veterinary care are also provided by GDTX.
The program is supported through grants and donations. It relies heavily on volunteers to help care for incoming puppies when they first enter the program. Black and yellow Labrador retrievers are the preferred breeds for GDTX’s programs.
“We’re eager to find kind, caring individuals who love dogs and are able to give the time and commitment to helping us ready these young puppies for advanced training down the road,” Patrick Glines, GDTX CEO, said. “Our volunteer puppy raisers are a wonderful group of individuals and families who really help set the foundation for these future guide dogs that will truly change the lives of our clients.”
Anyone living within a onehour drive of the organization’s 4-acre San Antonio campus is welcome to apply for consideration. The facility’s address is 1503 Allena Drive, San Antonio 78213 (phone, 210-366-4081).
