THE BOOKWORM
Our library has been the center of joyful activity as we continue offering programming to all ages. The summer theme this year is all based on Hollywood, and it’s called “A Reading Star is Born.”
Children are encouraged to continue using their reading skills until school starts up again, to prevent the infamous summer slide. You can pick up reading logs in the Youth Department as well as the Young Adult Department. You’re eligible to win prizes!
On Wednesday, July 12, we offer our babies an opportunity to play and learn more about the world with our Sensory Studio program at 9:30 a.m.; at 10:30 a.m., youngsters between the ages of 2 and 5 can enjoy storytelling, songs and crafts; at 1 p.m., adults will be taken back in time to “The Best Years of our Lives,” a movie that will be shown at The Center at Kronkosky; at 2 p.m., teens can relax, hang with friends and enjoy an 80s movie while eating popcorn; and at 6 p.m., lovers of crimes and crafts and listen to a true-crime podcast while working on a special project.
Food will be served as well. All these programs are free and open to the public. On Saturday, July 15, the always fun “Percussion Things” program will take place in the Community Room at 10:30 a.m. This is a family-friendly event.
New YA and Outreach Coordinator
We are pleased to announce that staff member Leah Mayo has been promoted to become our new Young Adult Services and Outreach Coordinator. Teens will get to meet her as they use our Hub, which is just for their age group. In addition to providing resources, services and programming to teens, Leah will also head up our outreach programming to the general public, and more specifically to senior citizens. Leah is currently attending the University of North Texas to pursue her Master’s in Library Sciences. Leah replaces outgoing employee Servando Pena.
Live! at the Library
On Thursday, July 20, at 7 p.m., the Gary Kyle Band will perform their take on country music. You can find out more about the group by visiting their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ garykylemusic/. We plan to host the concert outside at the Amphitheater behind the library. The program is a family-friendly event and absolutely free! Be sure to bring your chairs or blankets, and of course, bring a picnic supper! There will not be a concert during the month of August.
Discussion Groups Galore
The library hosts a variety of discussion groups for adults, with something for everyone’s reading tastes. On the first Monday of each month, our Boerne Beat poetry group meets at 9:15 a.m. ; on the first Thursday of each month at noon, lovers of the whodunit will have a great time discussing books during our Mysteries for Lunch program; on the second Monday of each month at noon, literary fiction is the genre we discuss; on the fourth Monday at noon, those who enjoy reading non-fiction will find Reality Readers a perfect fit for them; on the fourth Thursday of each month at 10 a.m., readers who enjoy a variety of genres, as well as classics, have the opportunity to gather and discuss these diverse titles during Mary’s Potpourri; and finally, on the last Wednesday of each month at noon, people with differing points of view get the chance to hear others’ opinions and try to meet in the middle. The program is called Conversation Café and is facilitated by Janis Fuchs.
Bookshop Under the Windmill Our amazing bookstore next to the library is open all summer long, Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shop, filled with gently used items, is wonderfully inviting, and it is chock-full of like-new books as well as DVDs, children’s items, and more! We encourage you to shop for great deals. The bookshop is operated by the Friends of the Boerne Public Library, and proceeds go toward library services and resources.
