A Walk in our woods: A Cibolo summer series

AT THE TRAIL

AT THE TRAIL

David Touchon is the Cibolo’s Land Manager. He has a wealth of knowledge and insights into the flora, fauna and the many little things that make the Cibolo Nature Center and Herff Farm special. He has almost 30 years in the field of Outdoor Education, with a majority of that time spent with the YMCA at Camp Grady Spruce where he created, taught and implemented curriculum for schools across the region.

The primary focus of Outdoor Education is to understand the natural world and create engagement and a memorable learning experience in the process. His unique imagination, eye for nature-inclusive design, and resourceful engineering has created the living roofs and the new hanging gourd structure “Gourd Mahal” at the Herff Farm Teaching Garden and ‘Log’, an original wood stacking game that staff members enjoy. He was even a volunteer firefighter for 20 years with the Possum Kingdom East VFD! This culmination of skills, knowledge, hobbies, and interests has made David the perfect person to lead A Walk in Our Woods: A Cibolo Summer Series.

This series of informational, interactive hikes is designed to get people actively engaged in learning about the nature in our area. This series is for adults 18 and older and is Thursdays 9:00am – 11:00am beginning July 6th. Topics include: Riparian flora, Prairie Flora, butterflies, birding, sensory, land management strategy/implementation/ performance and techniques (it is all about technique!) aquatic habitat, Outdoor Living Skills and most of all experiential education. Our first hike in the summer series will be Sensory Awareness Trail on Thursday, July 6th. This activity is a deep dive into the five human senses and tasks participants to hone their communication and woodland situational awareness skills. It’s also really fun! David has led the Cibolo staff on similar In-Service training throughout our trails, and his teaching style works well for even those with little outdoor experience!
