\\BOERNE– For the first time in its nearly 25-year history, the Boerne Police Department School Resource Officer Division will have a dedicated sergeant for the program.
Sgt. Bowen Patton will begin his duties July 24.
“This is our fastest growing division of the department,” Police Chief Steve Perez said. “Having a dedicated position will allow Sgt. Patton to focus on the required behind-the-scenes work and allow our SROs to concentrate on their campus’s needs.”
Patton will oversee all SROs and deputies affiliated with Boerne Independent School District. Additionally, he will schedule all security training for officers and teachers, while administering the plans for large-scale events such as homecoming parades, graduations and sporting events. “We are glad to welcome Sgt. Patton to his new role,” Boerne ISD Superintendent Dr. Thomas Price said. “As our district continues to grow, having a dedicated officer will help ensure our numerous events are enjoyed safely by thousands of people and families and run seamlessly.”
The Boerne Police Department and Boerne ISD first partnered in 1998 to create the SRO program and have expanded it to include all 12 schools in the district. School resource officers are seasoned patrol officers who have received hundreds of additional hours of specialized training in school safety, juvenile law and the criminal enforcement portions of the Texas Education Code.
Patton joined the department in 2013 and has a Master Peace Office License. He will continue to oversee training for officers at the Boerne Pol ice Depar tment including Field Training Officer, ASP/handcuff, Basic TCOLE, Firearms, Patrol Rifle, Combative/ Defensive Tactics, and Vehicle Extraction.
