Benefits of Graphic Novels Often, graphic novels get overlooked as suitable literature for children because many people think they are just pictures and do not aid in advancing reading levels.
However, as more research has been conducted about how the brain interacts with graphic novels, that has proven to be a misconception.
While it is true that graphic novels are stories told with panels of pictures on each page, the story would be incomplete and most likely incomprehensible without the accompanying text. The combination of having to interpret not only the words, but also the corresponding images, actually results in even more analysis and comprehension by the reader.
Graphic novels also present a unique and alternative educational opportunity for children with learning disabilities. Entire pages filled with text can present a frustrating and difficult experience for students who struggle with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia.
Since graphic novels have less text and offer visual cues that help with comprehending the storyline, students who are facing reading challenges can gain confidence in their reading and comprehension skills as they are able to complete entire books and series easier.
Here at the Patrick Heath Public Library, we love all books, especially graphic novels! That is why we offer nearly 800 different graphic novels just in our youth department alone! So, stop on by and check out some of our amazing graphic novels for the summer!
